EIKI was founded in 1953 in Osaka by Moriichi Matsuura, Shigeya Yagi, Koji Sekino and Yoshinari Minagawa. The focus of the company was manufacturing equipment for classroom AV needs and later on, the company focused more on manufacturing 16mm projectors.
EIKI had manufactured 8mm projectors for a short time in the past, but never attempted to offer 35mm projectors, instead of this, it had tried to market Tokiwa 35mm portables.
EIKI had a vast variety of model availability in 16mm projectors among the other Japanese manufacturers.
Most models are re-branded as elf in the UK, INTERNATIONAL and BELL+HOWELL in the U.S., as well as HANIMEX EIKI in Australia.

A unique attempt in Japanese 16mm projectors – Pin Cylinder Intermittent Pull Down System utilized in EX-4130PC, EX-6130 and PRO-1600
Originally it was developed by PHILIPS ELA Cinema Dept.
The precision made EIKI Intermittent Pin Cylinder System assures ultimate safety to the film, provides quiet, rock steady pictures, as steady as the well-known Geneva (Maltese cross) movement favored by professionals. Yet, unlike the Maltese cross projectors, the EIKI Pin Cylinder System does not decrease the picture brightness when compared toothed conventional cam claw pull down system. The pin cylinder mechanism consists of a 10-tooth drive sprocket where 5 frames of film are always engaged for smooth steady film handling, even with damaged or poorly spliced films. The 10-tooth intermittent drive sprocket is precisely advanced 24 fps by a pinion gear which drives a 10-pin cylinder wheel providing the intermittent motion. For high reliability and long service the entire mechanism operates in a sealed oil bath.

Hi Fernando,
I am afraid your wish is about a very specific model “PC” and difficult to obtain easily even in Japan.
You may try to find the reasonable priced Maltese cross model variations, but they are on pedestals originally.
Good luck!

Hi,
Thank you for your interest!
The statistical data is the difficult part of the job. The only proper source is Eiki Industrial in Osaka. Despite I’ve visited in 1995 never interested in that data. Now, all my friends specialized in the 16mm line there are retired.
Those type projectors are designed to show films in rural areas, auditoriums, concert halls and exhibitions on big screens.
Hope this helps for now.

Hi Alan,
“Molybdenum disulfide” (aka MOLY) grease is recommended for the cam and claw lever mechanism (every 500 hrs) by the EIKI service engineers.
Also, the molybdenum oil form is dropped every 100 hrs.
Prior to applying the chemicals, its advised that the whole cam tank mechanism should be cleaned.
Hope this helps for now.

I have a question about the Eiki Xenon EX 5500 A-1. I’m hoping you can help?
I’m looking for a manual (pdf) or otherwise a patent document, that includes schematic drawings of the projector. Would you have any idea where I could find such a thing?
Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi Eva,
EX-5500A-1 model is a Self Thread (aka Auto Load) 500W Xenon lamp portable projector and its mechanism and amplifier sections are the same as the SLIM LINE projectors.
Do you look for a specific section like the lamp section for repair or?
If its about the mechanism and amplifier sections, exploded drawings and schematics will be the same.
I may help, if you tell me more.
Thanks.
Cheers,
Erkan

I like the ‘last generation’ of 16mm Eiki projectors best and I’ve been trying to find a European ESL for years, but they seem exceptionally hard to find. Are they equally difficult to find in Japan? Do you know if the number of ESLs and ENTs produced was extremely small in comparison to SSLs and SNTs, because they cost so much more?
LikeLiked by 2 people
Hi Adrian,
I have seen one when I’ve paid a visit to EIKI, Osaka in 1995. As far as I remember, one European version was offered me at US$3000, with the condition of not telling the Turkish distributor here, who is my friend, too. :)
Generally, push-button types are expensive, the same is for ELMO, too.
They are rare in Japan, too, as you mentioned, as well as expensive and not an important functional necessity compared to the rotary-switch ones, unless someone needs to frequently interrupt the projection, FF and REW the film during the show, such as in a seminar, etc.
Those buttons were added when the 16mm film shows were declining already.
Hope this helps for now.

Thanks for your reply. In fact I have what’s basically a ENT (albeit in B&H 3592AX mode) and it’s the best projector I’ve ever owned. I’m in the UK but I was fortunate enough to obtain an new old stock dual voltage one from the USA. The added features are impressive and I much prefer the buttons, especially as I’ve owned Eikis with rotary switches that work but you can feel that the mechanism is not perfectly aligned and working 100% smoothly. I’ve finally this year managed to get a ESL from the USA but I had to buy a step up transformer use with it!
Your words make it seem that even less than I thought were produced, although I know they were available right up to the end of production around 2003, because I first saw photos of them on the sales website of Wittners in Germany. I suppose they would have become less expensive if they had been produced in larger quantities.
I think that if the technology had developed further, the following generation may have had remote control focussing and volume too, which would have been fantastic!
Were Eiki a popular projector distributed in substantial numbers in Turkey? Does your friend (or anyone in Turkey) sell spares?

You’re welcome by all means!
Every year EIKI was publishing a general catalog in Japanese in addition to individual leaflets.
I know from these literature that they were manufacturing a wide variety of 16mm projection equipment in the early 2000’s. However, cross marks on some EIKI models were appearing in their catalogs. ELMO and HOKUSHIN had already decreased their model line-up earlier than EIKI.
As far as I know, Wittner bought all the outfits left EIKI Deutschland has.
Remocons were already available for transport control long time ago, but for volume, framing and focusing, as you know.
Unfortunately, I am not in contact with that friend anymore. He was actually selling the digital shits.

* Rectifier 22.3 kgs. (49 lbs.)
* Speaker 11.7 kgs. (26 lbs.)
————————
Total 54.5 kgs. (120 lbs.)
The body (the projector itself) should be connected to the rectifier (the separate bottom box):
* The 4-prong plug with the cord of rectifier should be connected to the projector, whereas the 3-prong plug with the cord of rectifier to the projector.
* The power supply cord should be connected for line (The mains is supplied to the projector via the rectifier.).
* Also, the speaker should be connected to the projector body via a separate cable.
Hope this helps for now.

I have an Eiki EX-2000A (Xenon) projector that is missing the power cord. While there are some OEM power cords available that are made in Japan they cost well over $160 each. Is there a spec that I can use to get a conversion connector for this round 3-pin male receptacle? I have seen comments from others online where they used a Nanaboshi NCS-253-P connector, but it was for an Elmo CX-350 projector. Can’t find any manual or specs that address the power input receptacle.
Thanks

Hi Tom,
Any good quality connector will do the job.
So, you can follow the soldered cables for N (Neutral), L (LINE) and GND (GROUND/Earth).
The most important thing is the cable AC current capacity (wire thickness) and length, so the wires should handle the current well above its limits.

Erkan – thanks for the followup. Can you suggest a source and “spec” for the actual power plug?

Tom,
Aviation and lighting connectors will generally work.
If you are able to write the dimensions of the genuine connector, I can suggest you in a better way.
Normally, they are 3-pin circular male chassis-mount power connectors.

To change the projection speed of EIKI EX-5500-A from 24fps to 18fps, the motor pulley diameter should be reduced by 25% and the shutter should be three.
Japan’s Kobe Movie Museum has been remodeled to silently project silent movies from 16 fps to 18 fps to 20 fps.
The Kobe Movie Museum has the know-how to modify the projector.

Do you know if this version was manufactured by EIKI in Japan or was the modification carried out in the UK and do you have any information about the magnetic film side of these projectors?

Good, keep it well. A rare item.
Actually, EIKI was manufacturing two versions of the “Soundmate” Interlock/Double Band System (SEPMAG):
a) Compact-200 Series is connected permanently to the projector,
b) Twin-100 Series is joined in a side-by-side position to the projector.
The both have [PB] playback only and [PBR] playback+record versions.
elf of the UK and HANIMEX of Australia were selling rebadged products made by EIKI.
Hope this helps for now.

Hi Francisco,
First of all, 4130 PC should have a pin cylinder not Maltese cross.
The claw teeth can be removed from the claw lever for an easier replacement.
Those parts are very specific. Eiki, Osaka should have some still. However, expect pretty high pricing.
The best solution could be buying 2nd hand equipment not working or disassembled.
Where are you? So I can recommend some sources.
Good luck.
